Kareri Lake – Amazing trail accompanied by snow water spring
“When preparing to climb a mountain – pack a light heart.”
So, here I am to take you through my amazing experience of trekking to Kareri Lake which is situated in the abode of Dauladhar range of Himalayas.
About me and Planmytrek
I have traveled to many beautiful places in India, traversed the length and breadth of my country, and used all modes of transport-flight, road & rail, stayed in many big , small hotels and visited my hill-stations and beaches . For me, the meaning of travelling was restricted until here only. It was only during this year when I went for trekking, that the meaning of term travelling changed in my dictionary and it transformed into something which can not be explained in words . I never gave a serious thought to the idea of travelling by foot, staying in tents, carrying your back packs on your back until I was introduced to Planmytrek. I trekked to Kareri lake, near Dharamshala in the month of May this year for the first time in my life with this trekking organization in Kareri village Himachal Pradesh .
I was hanging back in the beginning, for it was going to be my first trekking experience not just to a new place that is located in himalayan ranges with wild life but with a planmytrek. But then, once I registered for the trek with this organization, they made me feel comfortable right from the beginning by providing us with the list of materials that would be required for the entire trip and also gave us instructions to maintain our fitness levels, so that we could reach our destination with ease. I then gave my fears a backseat, packed my backpack and moved on with 5 of my friends to this three day trek.
DAY 1 : Kareri Village to Rioti Camping
We received a warm welcome from Plamyrek team on the first day in village Kareri. We all were introduced to each other and yes, received instructions to be followed while climbing on the rocky surfaces of the Kareri lake trek. Here is a pic from our introduction session:
Before I forget and move on, I must mention that they served us delicious home-made breakfast and packed lunch. I never expected such good food in the hills where there are no restaurants, no road-side dhabas. So, thank you planmytrek for ensuring that we get the best hygienic food and energy required to move on and on for hours.Sharing some of the pics on the beautiful trail to kareri lake.
Alongside the Nyund river, sitting in nature’s lap away from the busy life of cities, this place and aura of the people around was wonderful and completely stress free. I would always cherish the memories of this beautiful trek. On the first day, we moved mid-way to a place called Rioti. At the campsite, we lit a bonfire had long chit chats and played Antakshri for hours.
DAY 2 : Rioti To Kareri Lake
On the second morning, we got up fresh with energies and moved on to our final destination. Many of us had a refreshing bath in the waterfall on the way. Though the second day trek was a bit tiring, once we reached our destination, we sat peacefully outside a temple besides the Kareri lake and regained our energies. Since we reached before the scheduled time, we played a few games besides the camp site reminding us all of our childhood days.
Day 3 : Kareri Lake to Kareri Village
On the third day we had to trek down towards Kareri village. But before we started, we had a wonderful session of yoga.
I had practiced yoga in my city, but having a yoga session amid the hills, besides a lake was mesmerizing.
We completed our third day trek also in time, boarded our buses back to respective cities and carried with us memories to cherish life long, new friends and yes cramps in our body (but no regrets for that). After all, there is no gain without pain. There is a sense of accomplishment within me to have completed such a beautiful trek. Thank you Planmytrek team and to all those who have yet not trekked with this team, here is a pic for you.
How to get there?
Buses are available from Dharamshala to Ghera village starting from 8 AM. The distance between the two places is about 20 kilometres which can also be covered by a hired jeep or taxi.
Best time to go
Anytime around the year is a good time to visit Kareri Lake and the nearby attractions. It should be noted though that during November/December to May/April the lake remains frozen and extra caution is required when visiting the lake as the ice thickness can be unpredictable and the surface slippery.
Few tips to remember
- Wear comfortable clothes and proper shoes
- Carry your own water bottles to stay hydrated
- Carry mosquito repellent, few snacks and a small first aid kit for emergencies
- Do not litter while trekking
